Traicy's Corner: Nob Hill Nights and Nostalgia for Free Parking

Traicy reflects on overnight utility work on Nob Hill and Fair Ave, recalls past days when downtown was bustling with neighbors, and vents about the county's Friday closures.

Well, here we are again with those flashing red lights on Nob Hill Boulevard and Fair Avenue—just like the good old days when the city would close a street for a week and nobody knew until they got stuck in traffic! I remember when you could park anywhere downtown for free, and neighbors would wave from their porches as they walked to the post office—now it’s just a blur of red lights and grumbling drivers, and I’m not sure who’s supposed to be doing the grumbling anymore.

And another thing, I’m still fuming about those Friday closures at the Public Services office—I mean, it’s not like we’re getting a day off from being harassed by bureaucracy! Back in the day, if you needed to get a permit or pay your water bill, you could just walk in and chat with the folks who knew you by name. Now they’re closing the door on Fridays like it’s a secret society meeting, and I’m supposed to believe it’s for our convenience? The city council must’ve forgotten how to talk to the people who actually live here, not just the developers who keep building on the same old lots they’ve been eyeing for years.

Speaking of old lots, I can’t help but think back to when Nob Hill was the heart of downtown, not just a patch of road with utility lines and flashing signals. I used to love walking down there on a summer evening, stopping at the corner store for a cold drink, and seeing Mrs. Henderson wave from her porch like she’d been waiting for me all day. Now it’s just a construction zone with a sign that says ‘Work in Progress’—and I don’t even know who’s supposed to be working on it or why it’s taking so long. And another thing, I’m still waiting for someone to explain why we need to close the street at 9 PM when the only people out at that hour are the ones who can’t sleep or the ones who are trying to get home after a late shift. It’s like they’re trying to make us all stay in bed, but nobody’s telling us why. That’s all for this week. You know where to find me.
